April Wrap Up/May's Coming Attraction

FireFlies Restaurant & Coffee bar in Alexandria was THE place to be this past Saturday night!

For those of you who couldn't make it, we had a fantastic crowd-ette (that's a small crowd, btw) who braved the raindrops to make the scene. Many of those in attendance had even navigated their way across the 14th St. Bridge for The Big Event, proving that there is indeed nightlife outside of The District -- who knew?

The film itself was well-written and engaging, capturing the drama and tension of a family whose members are each struggling with their own demons and the uncertainties of the future while also being forced to address the dark history of their past.

If you missed this screening, but still want to see the film, you're in luck: after each month's feature is shown the DVD goes into the library's collection. All you have to do to borrow it is to become a library member (free -- and you don't have to be an Alexandria resident) and then reserve the DVD either on line or at any of the library branches. Tres ez.

Next up in the series -- which we'll be showing May 31st at 8:30 at FireFlies -- is the 2007 Aussie police thriller "Noise."
Like all the films in our series, this one comes with a high pedigree & awards from around the globe: it was an "Official Selection" at festivals in Newport, Sundance & Seattle, won six Australian Film Institute (Australian Oscars®) Awards and brought also brought home five Australian Film Critics Circle awards.

What's it about? Here's the skinny from the film's press kit: "This is a story about the wrong person in the right place at the wrong time. Two heinous crimes have left a suburban town reeling. Police quickly connect them but are desperate for witnesses as the local community enfolds itself in a shroud of secrecy, borne from fear and an untrammeled mistrust of authority.

A young police constable, Graham McGahan, suffers from a chronic hearing problem and applies for worker's compensation. To his chagrin, he is stationed at a police caravan near the crime scene. Living on the periphery of the investigation, McGahan crosses paths with the various people affected by the tragedies and uncovers an unraveling nightmare of guilt and suspicion."

Sounds intense, hm? I'll have more information plus a trailer here in the next week or so. If you're antsy to see more before that time, check out the official site for the film where you can find the trailer, bios & additional info.

One additional note: because of the thick Aussie accents in this film we'll be presenting it with Closed Captioning on.
